Voice Movement Therapy (known as VMT for short) is an expressive arts therapy. This means it’s in the same family as dance therapy, music therapy, art therapy, etc.
VMT combines work with the breath, body, and voice to allow a person to access, express, and interpret more of their inner world.
For more information about VMT, check out the website of the International Association of Voice Movement Therapy (IAVMT).
For each person, a VMT session takes a different direction.
Do you have a specific goal in mind for your VMT work? Perhaps you would like to practice or improve a specific skill such as feeling more confident during public speaking, performing and singing in front of others, or becoming a captivating story teller.
Or, you might be interested in writing songs. (The word “song” is used loosely here to describe any part of a song, in any stage of development. Not all songs created in VMT will be complete with several verses, a chorus, and a bridge!—although some may be.)
Finally, you may want to approach your Voice Movement Therapy journey with a specific therapeutic goal. Perhaps you’d like to connect deeply to a part of yourself you may have lost or forgotten or feel disconnected from. You might want to hear what that part has to say, and embrace it as one important part of your many-faceted identity.
These examples just scratch the surface. There is so much to explore through VMT!
